La Campenella (1826)
Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840)
Now better known as a staple piano showpiece by Frank Liszt, La Campanella (Little Bell) was originally the 3rd and final movement of the great violinist Niccolò Paganini’s Violin Concerto No.2 in B minor, Op.7, written in 1826. A “little bell” sound, whether played by the triangle or imitated by the soloist and orchestra, always presages the entry of the main theme of this rondo, hence the nickname. This melody, as memorable as many of Paganini’s others, has a touch of gypsy character which adds to the brilliance of this movement. The listener expecting a break in breathtaking excitement upon arriving at the trio section is quickly taken up again by Paganini’s pioneering virtuosic passages, which would yet remain consistent to the nature of this more genial section. Structurally tight and precise, this piece highlights Paganini’s qualities as a top-rate composer.
You can listen to the immortal Soviet violinist Kogan play this famous piece here.
